To legally stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you must obtain residence authorization through the appropriate visa or an approved in-country application. Once authorization is granted, non-EU nationals receive a TIE, which is the physical residence card confirming their legal status.
Permanent & Semi-Permanent Visa Options
The TIE, or Foreigner Identity Card, is issued to non-EU nationals after residence authorization has been approved. Its validity depends on the type of residence permit. Initial temporary residence is typically granted for one year, renewals are commonly granted for two years, and long-term residence is granted for five years.
Brexit TIE: Available to UK nationals who can prove residence in Spain prior to 31/12/2020.
Student TIE: Student residence authorization is granted for the duration of an accredited academic program lasting more than 90 days, provided the applicant demonstrates sufficient financial means and valid health insurance.
Digital Nomad Visa: Available to non-EU nationals who work remotely for companies located outside Spain or operate an international business with limited Spanish sourced income. Applicants must demonstrate income equivalent to at least 200 percent of Spain’s minimum wage, maintain private health insurance, and meet professional or educational criteria. Approved applicants receive residence authorization and a TIE.
Student Visa: A student visa is required for non-EU nationals undertaking studies in Spain that last more than 90 days. It is generally obtained before arrival in Spain unless the applicant qualifies to apply from within the country. Upon approval, the student receives a corresponding residence card.
'Arraigo': Arraigo refers to several exceptional residence pathways available to individuals who have lived in Spain for a qualifying period and can demonstrate integration, employment, family ties, or participation in recognized training programs. The specific requirements depend on the type of arraigo being requested.
Spouse or long-term partner (pareja de hecho): For partners of EU residents living in Spain.
Non-Lucrative Visa: Spain uses the IPREM (Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator) to set these limits. For 2026, the main applicant must show 400% of the IPREM, which totals €28,800 per year ($32,000 USD approx), plus 100% of the IPREM (€7,200) for each additional family member.
Economic Visa: Work based residence permits are available to individuals who secure qualifying employment in Spain. Approval depends on the type of work authorization and may require labor market review unless the position qualifies under a specialized category such as Highly Qualified Professional status.
